OVERVIEW
6 REASONS WHY THE RETAIL DEVELOPMENT SHOULD NOT GO AHEAD
DIVERTED INVESTMENT
Independent businesses on Front Street will lose out on both trade and investment, as attention is drawn to Low Prudhoe.
MORE DISRUPTION
Traffic will become more frequent and the construction phase will go on for many years.
LAND IS UNSUITABLE
It will be built on an old mineshaft, landfill site and flood plain.
MORE POLLUTION
Increased levels of waste, sound and light pollution will affect local residents.
ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
The retail park will become an area for young people to congregate, especially at night.
LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY
Habitat loss and pollution will have disastrous consequences for the ecosystem.
OUR STATEMENT
As a Prudhoe resident and a pupil of Prudhoe High School, I am very concerned about the attempt by Northumberland Estates to construct a 2.3-hectare retail park on a site south of in Low Prudhoe Industrial Estate. While it is argued that the development will make shopping more convenient and bring investment to the area, it is difficult to ignore the numerous disadvantages of the project. I refuse to believe the developers' assurances that our local, independent businesses on Front Street will not lose out on both trade and investment, nor do I accept that the local ecosystem will remain intact and unscathed. It is quite easy to simply start from scratch by building a retail park on the edge of town, but can we just abandon local businesses in the town centre, allow our residents' well-being to be affected by regular disruption or sit back as the local ecosystem is ripped apart?
The alterations caused by the retail development are irreversible. For the good of our town, I urge you to take a step back and seriously consider the impact that this development will have not only on yourself but on your family, the wildlife of Prudhoe and the wider community. We must allow our voices to be heard before it is too late.
